Gallegos Family

Hector Gallegos Senior and his wife, Graciela Martinez Flores.

Graciela started in pottery with help from her neighbor, Olivia Mora. Olivia was born in the sierra above Mata Ortiz and learned pottery from her mother.

Olivia already made pottery before she moved to Mata Ortiz.

Graciela taught her husband Hector the basics of pottery making. Even today, Graciela generally makes the pots and does the surface preparation while Hector paints the pieces and does the firing. Hector and Graciela have four adult children: they are all very talented potters.
